Every permanent resident of the United Kingdom has access to public healthcare. When necessary, healthcare is provided for no cost and is financed by general taxes. nearly 4.5% of the average citizen's income, or nearly 18% of income tax, is allocated to healthcare. Approximately 8.4% of the UK's GNP is spent on healthcare overall. Although it is currently much smaller than the public sector, the private healthcare industry in the UK is also expanding.

The NHS is a publicly funded healthcare system in the United Kingdom. A collection of publicly funded healthcare systems in the UK make up the NHS.
