The health care system in Italy is a national health service that is regionally administered. All Italian citizens and foreign nationals residing in the nation under a regular permit are eligible for free universal coverage through this system. The Servizio Sanitario Nazionale (SSN) is the Italian term for the national healthcare system.

It is primarily financed by national and local taxes, with additional funding coming from private initiatives and private insurance plans, which are still not very common in Italy. The entire amount spent on health care in Italy in 2021 made up 9.5% of GDP. Approximately 75% of the total amount spent on health care was financed by the public sector.

Health care system & professionals

The regions are in charge of resource allocation and management as well as the delivery and promotion of health care services, while the national government establishes the guiding principles and standards of the healthcare system. However, the system's partial decentralization causes significant differences in the accessibility and caliber of healthcare among geographic areas.

With an average of 4.1 physicians per 1,000 people, Italy also takes pride in being among the nations with the highest doctor density.

Hospitals

Regional health units are responsible for allocating public funds to accredited private and public hospitals when it comes to hospital management. In Italy, the majority of hospitals are state-owned and function as partially autonomous public enterprises or are directly overseen by regional health departments. While the number of hospital beds saw a sharp increase between 2020 and 2021, the number of hospitals has declined in recent years. The vast majority of Italians claim to be happy with the hospitalized medical care they have received.

The World Health Organization lists Italy as having one of the best health care systems in the world, despite structural problems, funding reductions, and regional disparities. The system has proven to be resilient. However, the system is under a great deal of strain due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, with Italy being one of the hardest hit nations.
